Description
•
With its characteristic brown-black coat and tawny muzzle, the black bear is the most common bear in North America. Found from Alaska to Mexico, its adaptability has helped it thrive for over a million years.
•
Black bears are agile climbers, strong swimmers, and opportunistic omnivores—eating everything from berries and nuts to fish and small mammals. In summer, they can gain up to 30 pounds a week to prepare for
winter hibernation.
Each winter, females give birth to tiny cubs in
their dens, raising one to five young every two
years. Thanks to conservation efforts, the black
bear population is now estimated at 850,000—
